Exhaustion... It's Normal!

My roommate and I had the opportunity to attend a transitions workshop on Saturday. Since we just made a huge transition by moving across the world we thought it would be a good idea. It turned out to be a great idea. So many questions were answered, even questions I didn't even know I had.

One thing I learned about was why I am always so exhausted. Moving to another country and learning how to live life all over again is exhausting. Just doing the basics of going to the store to get groceries is an all day feat. Usually I spend an hour or two at the store and then I am done for the day because I am just so tired. Well I got an answer to why... So when you do things that are habit the front part of your brain turns off and relies on the back part where all your habits are stored. Well here I have had to learn (and still learning) new habits, this is causing my brain to use the front part which in turn make me more exhausted because I am working a different part of my brain. But once these new things become habits they move to the back part of the brain and it won't be so exhausting :).

There are many things that are affected when you transition (not just moving, but getting married, dating, stages of life, etc). There are three different stages of a transition. There is the exodus stage (ending, letting go). The exodus stage is where you let go of the familiar and acknowledge that something is end and something new is beginning. The second stage is the desert, the neutral zone (this can sound bad but it isn't the great part is you're not alone). This can be the longest stage, during this stage things don't feel normal, feels like you are roaming and nothing is really progressing. I feel like I am in the desert stage because all my habits are disrupted and I have to think more and develop a new routine and way of living. The old is gone, but the new hasn't become fulling integrated or operational yet. The third stage is the promise land (does this remind you of the Israelites after leaving Egypt). In the promise land you are a changed person, there is a new "normal". I can't wait to see what it is like to enter the promise land of living here looks like.

It was just really great to hear about transitions and the different emotions one might experience during each stage. I can definitely identify with a couple of them. It's nice to know that it is normal and that I'm not over emotional. Also I have noticed that there are things that I loved to do in the States and I don't want to do them here. It is just part of the transition.

Here are the emotions roller coaster or curve during transitions (it reminds me of the culture shock roller coaster)

Fresh Air... YES PLEASE!!!!

Last weekend, my roommate and I had the amazing opportunity to go to SaPa. Sapa has an altitude of 1200m to 1800m. There are six ethnic minorities found there. There are also beautiful views everywhere you go. We took the 6 hour bus ride to this beautiful town Friday morning. We also took our administrative assistant with us! This was a great get to know her more and God opened a lot of doors.

We had the opportunity to go trekking on Saturday. We went to the mountain to Love Waterfall and Silver Waterfall. It was so beautiful; I enjoyed walking the beautiful scenery. I could have stayed there forever just soaking in the beauty that God created. I just can’t wrap my head around the beauty I was seeing and God saying that I am more beautiful than all of it! WHAT!!! We are God’s masterpieces! WOW! Seriously, we are so loved!

The beautiful Love Waterfall. I could have stayed here all day!!

The next day we went and hiked another mountain to Heaven’s Gate and the Clouds. It was really pretty, just a lot of stairs LOL. But it was really pretty to go to the top and look out and see the town below and all the mountains. The world just seemed so peaceful and beautiful! I can’t wait to go back again!

God also provided some awesome opportunities to share Jesus with our administrative assistant. She had some great questions! I pray that God continues to soften her heart and provide more opportunities for us to share with her. I really feel like a part of the reason God called me here is to get to know our co-workers and share Jesus with them. There have been many opportunities for us to get close to co-workers and build relationships. I can’t wait to see these seeds start to grow!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

My first ever parent-teacher conferences were held today. Our 58 students were divided between the 4 foreign teachers. So I had 15 parents to meet with in 4 hours in 15 minute time slots. Sounds possible but factor in interpreting both English to the local language and vice versa, 15 minutes seems like 5. So we were behind by 15 minutes the whole time.

It was a great opportunity to meet the parents of most of the student. I just told them how much we enjoy their students and how they have improved in English since the beginning of school, which was only 9 weeks ago! Many parents were very happy with the school and their child's progress. I only had one parent who never smiled and gave the impression that they weren't happy.

The second conference was my favorite! The mother of one of my 1st grade boys came and was just really positive about everything. She also said that her son comes home everyday and says how much he loves Miss Allie (that's me!!!) :). It just blessed my socks off. And it was so nice to hear good things from parents! I loved that this is how God orchestrated the conferences to begin and it just continued to be great from there!

God is at work in this school! Even when days are hard and things don't seem to go right, He is always there leading us through the storm. And then great things happen, like excellent parent teacher conferences. I am so glad to be here and being part of what God has planned for this school, community, city, and country!!!!
